One thing you tend to find if you cycle regularly is that more often than not end up doing the same routes. Earlier on this week I was browsing through the web and came across the Sustrans website, I used the Online Mapping site to see what routes were fairly local. I noticed that there was a nice traffic free route from Market Harborough to Northampton which was part of the National Cycle Network Route 6 which connects London to Keswick. After unsuccessfully trying to find the yesterday (ended up going the wrong way when I did eventually find it) I made sure I did my homework and came well prepared this time, I had read somewhere that the easiest place to join the route was by the side of Protheroes Garage on the A508 in addition to this I downloaded the Ordnance Survey map for my phone.
The Route
Lenght: 17 miles each (can easily extended by loop of Pitsford Reservoir as I did)
Difficulty: 2/5 (easy but tougher if you detour)
Map:
The route itself is on a disused railway line so is nice and flat and wide enough to cycle two abreast, it has 3 or 4 crossing point with A and B roads but these are well signposted and generally quiet. The route is nice and scenic taking you through the two 480 meter tunnels (according to the council) firstly the Great Oxendon Tunnel followed a few miles later by the Kelmarsh Tunnel (both are pitch black so ensure you take your lights), as the route passes through the countryside there are quiet several roads and bridleways off the main track taking you into some beautiful villages. I extended my ride by doing a loop of Pitsford Reservoir which is handy for refuelling at the cafe and also has a cycle shop should you be running low on spares.
I really enjoyed the peace and quiet of the ride and can’t wait to find my next traffic free route.
